This March, we proudly celebrate Senior Nutrition Program Month and the essential services that help older adults stay healthy and connected. Nutrition is essential to healthy aging, however, older adults across the nation struggle to access the foods they need to stay well. According to the USDA, nearly 7 million older adults were food insecure in 2022. This growing need highlights why nutrition is central to our mission at the WellMed Charitable Foundation to help older adults stay active and healthy.
Every weekday, the WCF provides nutritious meals and nutrition services to 15 senior activity centers across Texas and Florida. These meals support older adults who are managing chronic conditions, working on improving their mobility or simply looking to reduce isolation by sharing a meal with friends. In 2025, we have served over 187,000 meals in our centers. But our nutrition efforts go beyond daily meals. Through community partnerships, we bring mobile pantries, market days and fresh food distributions to older adults in the communities we serve in.
Aside from our work in the senior activity centers, the WCF provides grants to organizations who share a commitment to addressing food insecurity. Through grants, made possible thanks to WellMed employees like you, we help fund programs such as Meals on Wheels San Antonio, Feeding America Tampa Bay, Midwest Food Bank and community restaurants like Taste Project. Last year, we awarded $500,000 to communities in Texas and Florida.
These efforts are further enforced by our wonderful WellMed volunteers who participate in volunteer events with our partners and organize food drives in the clinics and office locations. Their support ensures that older adults in our communities have a consistent and dignified source of healthy food.
Help us celebrate Senior Nutrition Program month by referring a loved one (60+) to our centers, if you are a non-profit partnering with us community volunteer request, or by clicking here to find a food bank in your area.
