Fiesta season has arrived in San Antonio and WellMed is introducing its official 2026 WellMed Fiesta Medal! This year’s medal is more than a collectible, it represents connection, care and community impact with all proceeds supporting older adults and caregivers in the community.
What is Fiesta?
It’s a 10-day celebration held each spring that highlights the city’s culture and history through music, food festivals, and parades to raise funds for charitable causes in the city. Residents and visitors don flower crowns, enjoy chicken on a stick topped with its signature jalapeno and see papel picado decorating streets throughout the city. A longstanding Fiesta tradition includes purchasing and trading Fiesta Medals.
WellMed is a longtime participant in the celebration through its annual Fiesta Medal. This year’s medal was designed by one of its own employees.
After hosting a medal design contest, and employees selected a vibrant design entry created by Procurement Supervisor Andrew Ramos. He explains how the design tells the WellMed story one meaningful detail at a time.
“I wanted to hide a few WellMed “easter egg” icons within the Fiesta medal, so I intergraded brand references by incorporating the 24/7 sun and the curved arrow into the sun element of the design,” Ramos said.
He also included the stethoscope with a medical cross to represent WellMed’s medical impact on the community and its core foundation.
“The ribbon text, ‘Caring for our community’, grew directly from WellMed’s story, values and mission, which all point back to who we are and what we stand for,” Ramos said. “I had the opportunity to visit a WCF Senior Activity Center and from the time we step in the center you can just feel the love respect everyone has for each other so I wanted to incorporate that to show how much WellMed cares for older adults.”
Ramos does not consider himself an artist or a designer, but credits his daughter, Elena, and the time they spend coloring and painting together for inspiring his creative side.
“She would tell me that art can be anything—a smiley face, a flower, birds, a person, or hearts—and that it comes from what you’re thinking.” Ramos said. “That perspective inspired me to approach this opportunity with a free‑spirited creative mindset and as a simple way to give back to the community.”
When asked what excites him most about the release of the 2026 Fiesta Medal, Ramos said he is looking forward to seeing how people respond.
“I’m excited to see people’s reactions when they first see the medal and hopefully feel proud wearing something I created, but more than that, I feel a strong sense of pride knowing the medal helps support our community.”
