WCF Dallas Redbird Members showcase collection of artwork

By on January 31st, 2024

WellMed Charitable Foundation’s (WCF) Dallas Senior Activity Center at Redbird Square partnered with the Dallas Museum of Art to showcase a collection of artwork from the center’s art class participants. The exhibit, comprised of mixed media pieces, is the first time the museum has featured local community artwork.

Twice a month, a representative from the museum leads art classes at the center, providing supplies and guidance to members. The partnership provides opportunities for older adults to connect with their community and express themselves creatively.

“This is the first time some of our members have even been inside the museum,” said Jasmine Kelly, supervisor of senior center operations at Redbird Square. “And to see their own artwork on display, they were really proud.”

The exhibit, which has been on display since December, has been popular with visitors, and the museum hopes to continue displaying local artwork through its community engagement initiative.

“This is a great example of how art can bring people together,” said Virginia Williams, senior center member. “We need unity in our community; we need to come together.”

Redbird Square is one of fourteen senior centers in Texas and Florida operated by the WellMed Charitable Foundation. All provide a variety of programs and services for older adults, including art classes, fitness classes and social activities. Membership is open to people 60 and older and their caregivers at no cost.

“I love coming to the senior center,” said Carolyn Lucas, 88, who frequents Redbird Square five days a week. “My daughter cares for me, but she works, so she drives me to the center every morning so I can connect with people.”

This is exactly what the Redbird Square staff likes to hear.

“We are committed to providing opportunities for older adults to connect with their community and stay active,” said Kelley. “Our partnership with the Dallas Museum of Art is a great example of how we are working to achieve that goal.”
