Did you know falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults? One in four older adults report experiencing a fall each year.
This month, WellMed Charitable Foundation senior activity centers are spotlighting simple ways to stay safe and steady during Falls Prevention Awareness Week, Sept. 22–26, 2025.
Centers across Texas and Florida will offer activities and home safety tips to help older adults stay balanced and confident. Classes such as Torso Strength, Balance Workout, Myths and Realities on Falls, and Fall Prevention Bingo are available to adults ages 60 and older in participating communities.
Joey Raya, fitness advisor at the Brownsville Senior Activity Center, says focusing on prevention helps older adults stay active and independent in their daily routines.
“We do this in our senior centers by promoting balance, strength, and awareness, as well as educating our members on best practices to prevent falls.” says Joey. “Falls can lead to serious injuries, long recovery times, and financial burden, so it is critical that we give our members the best guidance before accidents may occur.”
Lindsey Wood, fitness advisor at the Fern Park Senior Activity Center, says these classes include strength training exercises using resistance bands and chairs to build muscles in the legs, hips and core.
“Stronger muscles provide better support for joints, making walking and standing safer and steadier. This makes everyday movements like reaching, bending, or turning easier and safer.” says Lindsey.
