Strategies for treating dementia-related sleep issues with Nancy A. Hodgson, RN, PhD

Most individuals living with dementia experience changes in their sleep patterns. Understanding and treating these sleep disturbances can be challenging for caregivers. Research suggests that sleep medications are not effective; however, nondrug approaches are helpful in improving sleep in persons with dementia. This presentation will describe the link between dementia and sleep disorders, and discuss strategies for treating dementia-related sleep issues.

Nancy A. Hodgson, RN, PhD, FAAN
Nancy A. Hodgson, RN, Ph.D., FAAN is associate professor in the Department of Biobehavioral Health and Anthony Buividas Term Chair in Gerontology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. A nationally recognized nurse researcher , Dr. Hodgson’s career has been focused on the development, testing, and dissemination of person-centered and family-centered interventions for persons living with dementia. This work has helped to inform care practices for persons living with dementia and their caregivers through the development of palliative care protocols that address the leading symptoms in dementia that cause distress or impair quality of life. As a clinician and educator, Dr. Hodgson seeks out innovative ways to foster academic-community partnership by linking research and practice in order to move evidence-based findings into dementia care practice. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the Gerontological Society of America.
