Music and Memory with Candice Slusher, LVN
The life of a family caregiver seems almost unbearable, and many times the health of the caregiver suffers greatly, to the detriment of the care recipient. But what if there was a magic trick that could not only ease the burden of the caregiver, but also improve the quality of life for the person with dementia? Personalized Music Programming isn’t magic. It’s science! Extensive neuroscience research has shown our brains are hard-wired to connect music with long-term memory. Candyce Slusher will explain how to use this program, why it works, and discuss various ways using beloved music can enhance your life as a caregiver.

Candice Slusher, LVN
I am a geriatric LVN serving San Antonio since 1995, in home care and long term settings. I have served the board of the Alamo Area Home Care Council for 12 years in nearly every capacity. I am a Master Trainer and Facilitator for the Stress-Busting Program for Family Caregivers since 2009. In 2013, I co-founded M.U.S.I.C. Project, a 501C3 organization focusing on musician volunteerism in our community. I became certified in Music and Memory in 2013 and have been spreading the word about music as a behavioral management technique for dementia persons ever since. I have been an Alzheimer’s Association volunteer for the last 10 years fundraising, facilitating support groups, and am now Chairperson of their Music and Memory at Home program. In each of these roles, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with our community’s geriatric population and the families and professionals who care for these valuable members of our society.
