June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, here’s how Cross Roads raised awareness

By on June 23rd, 2026

Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, respect and safety. During Elder Abuse Awareness Month, we highlight the importance of protecting older adults from abuse, neglect and exploitation while raising awareness about available resources.

Elder abuse can affect any older adult and often goes unnoticed. Nearly 1 in 10 Americans age 60 or older experience some form of abuse, including physical, emotional, financial or verbal abuse, or neglect.

This year marks the ninth year Cross Roads Senior Activity Center staff and members have participated in the Elder Abuse Awareness Walk & Resource Fair in the Rio Grande Valley. Due to inclement weather, indoor activities at Las Palmas Community Center included a Zumba routine led by Cross Roads fitness instructor Fabiola Guzman.

The event serves as a visible reminder that preventing elder abuse is a shared responsibility and that everyone has a role in building safer, more connected communities.

By raising awareness, recognizing warning signs and supporting older adults, we can help ensure everyone ages with the respect and care they deserve. Learn the warning signs and resources to help someone you suspect is experiencing abuse.
