Polypharmacy and Common Drug Interactions in Older Adults
The use of multiple medications increases as an individual has more health conditions and as one ages. This has been coined polypharmacy. As an individual takes more medications, they are at a greater risk of side effects and drug interactions. This talk will delve into what can lead to inappropriate polypharmacy, common drug interactions, and how you can be empowered as a patient or caregiver to identify these potential problems before they happen.

Becky Mahnan, PharmD, BCGP, BCACP, FASCP
Becky Mahan, PharmD, BCGP, BCACP, FASCP is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the Geriatrics/Pediatrics Division and Vice Chair of Experiential Programs at TTUHSC Jerry H. Hodge School of Pharmacy. An alumna of Butler University, she completed a community-practice residency with Penobscot Community Health Care and a Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Residency with TTUHSC/VA-North Texas. She maintains a clinical practice site at Hendrick Home Health, a hospital-affiliated home health agency, focused on improving patient safety through the care transitions process and at home. Her practice interests include expanding the role of pharmacists in geriatrics outside of inpatient/long-term care settings, evaluating ways to decrease polypharmacy, and caregiver advocacy.
