The Stress-busting Program is an evidence-based program under the Caregiver SOS service umbrella that is proven to reduce stress, anxiety and anger and improve quality of life. The ability to teach stress self-management techniques and coping skills have attracted agencies in 22 states and Puerto Rico to this nine-week program. Puerto Rico has adopted the Spanish versions that are more than a translation. They are a cultural adaptation that reflects the beliefs and traditions of Spanish-speaking families around the globe.
Omayra Encarnación Nova, BSN, CON, MPH oversees the program for the Department of Health in Puerto Rico. “In my role as the coordinator of this program, I would say the experience has been enriched for the participants but also for the facilitators, who are immensely committed to the SBP. We have been able to identify the needs of the participants that can be managed through the stress management strategies. We have also been able to reach communities within the island that have many challenges, primarily because of the lack of resources or access to resources.”
During the nine weeks, caregivers are encouraged to share their stories and strategize how to best manage their stress and all that they do as caregivers. Practicing self-care is a constant theme throughout the program as well. Encarnación Nova notes, “the feedback as it relates to the stress management strategies has been excellent. Caregivers report putting into use the stress management strategies they have learned. The evaluations after the program have been good, in fact they are asking what other types of programs are available for family caregivers. This is relevant because there are not many evidence-based programs in Puerto Rico. In our strategic work plan for the Division of Community Health, the Stress-Busting Program is a priority.”
