We are saddened to share the passing of Doris Griffin, a cherished member of our community and powerful advocate for older adults in San Antonio and across Texas.
Edna “Doris” Griffin, was a trailblazer for older adults, a respected leader and fashion icon. She served on the Joint City/Council Commission on Elderly Affairs in San Antonio, led Jefferson Outreach for Seniors for nearly three decades, and co-hosted the international television program “Live Longer and Love It”. Through every role, Doris made a lasting impact with her leadership and dedication to improving older adults’ lives.
In 2015, the WellMed Charitable Foundation (WCF) and the City of San Antonio honored Doris by naming the Doris Griffin Senior Activity Center after her. Since then, thousands of older adults have enjoyed warm meals, fun activities among other services the center offers at no cost. Doris often visited, and checked in on the members as they attended Zumba classes, played pool or enjoyed their morning coffee.
Beyond the city of San Antonio, Doris served nine terms in the Texas Silver Haired Legislature, continuing to advocate for policies that addressed the needs of older adults in Texas.
On Jan. 30 the WCF and the city honored the life of Doris Griffin at the senior center named in her honor. Family, friends, and local officials gathered to share stories, some inspiring, some humorous, and many heartfelt, in remembrance of the light Doris brought to each of their lives.
During a speech, Peaches Hall, center manager for the center, highlighted the members who volunteered during the event. Several volunteers who opened doors, directed people to their seats, distributed snacks and light refreshments, were members themselves. She emphasized that volunteers were not planned for the memorial, however, she received overwhelming response from the members wanting to honor Doris with their service. Further proof of how appreciated Doris was at the center.
We are grateful for the time we shared with Doris and for the legacy she leaves behind. Her impact will continue to be felt through out our community and within the WellMed Charitable Foundation. We are committed to continue her mission of supporting and empowering older adults for generations to come.
